Tree Selection and Placement

The first step to a lush landscape is selecting an appropriate tree variety. As experienced local tree specialists, we can recommend the right trees to plant in the spot you have selected. Alternatively, we can help you choose the best location for the variety you have your heart set on.

When evaluating the viability of a selected site, we consider existing plantings, soil conditions and terrain. In addition, we evaluate the surroundings. Are there overhead or underground utility wires that need to be avoided? Are there large structures that can block sunlight or affect drainage? Do we need to consider the effects of frequent foot traffic? Each tree species has a unique set of conditions that allow it to thrive. It is our job to align the needs of the tree with the wishes of the property owner.

Matching the tree to the site benefits both the health of the tree and your enjoyment of it. The wrong tree in the wrong location can lead to future problems caused by limited growing space, insect infestation, disease or poor growth. Tree Planting Preparation

Critical components of successful tree planting include planning and preparation. Before a tree is planted, our arborists will complete a site assessment. This will help us determine what steps we need to take to improve the soil, the foundation of every planting project. This preparation can be the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy tree. Preparing the site correctly will transform your land to a healthy and beautiful base for your trees.

When you hire a professional arborist to select, plant and maintain your trees, you don’t have to worry. You can just enjoy the fruits of our labor. And you can feel confident in knowing that you will be able to enjoy your new home landscape for years to come.

Tree Planting

As dedicated arborists, our passion is for promoting the development, health, and growth of trees. After tree selection, planning, and soil preparation, we’re ready to start planting.

At Newton Hook Tree Care, we have the equipment, knowledge and experience needed to give your tree a healthy start. Our crew is punctual and responsible and we’ll leave your property as tidy as we found it.

Mulch protects the tree roots from heat and cold, conserves moisture and provides organic matter and nutrients as it decomposes. That is why we:

  • Utilize a bio-stimulant solution at planting, along with “mudding in” every tree with water as the backfill soil is applied.
  • Spread arborist 2-4″ thick in a donut shape around the new tree.
  • Pull mulch back from the trunk 1-2″ so that the root flair is visible.

The site where the tree trunk meets the soil is an important zone for air and gas exchange and the long term health of the tree.

  • Trees generally should not be staked as they need to flex and move to gain strength.
  • If a site is very windy or a bare root tree is planted it may be staked for one year.
  • A 25 gallon water bag or a soaker hose system is available at installation to provide even watering.
  • Only broken or damaged branches should be pruned at planting.
  • The tree needs as much leaf surface as possible to produce the food and nutrients to generate new roots.

Care After Planting

Trees planted in the landscape have been raised in a nursery where they have received optimal conditions for the development of healthy roots, trunk, limbs and leaves. This includes consistent water, sunlight and nutrition as well as minimal competition from other plants, diseases, insects or animals. We offer ornamental and shade tree pruning.

When a tree is dug from the comfortable setting of the nursery row most of the well-established roots are cut off and left behind, leaving the tree with the same amount of leaves and wood to support with a limited amount of roots to supply water and nutrients. Container-grown trees retain most of their root system but still may experience the “shock” of being moved to a new location. These trees may have girdling or kinked roots that may have to be cut at planting.

Transplant shock can set in due to this stress of being moved. We do all we can to reduce this from happening by using the above planting practices. Once we leave the property it is the owners responsibility to maintain the trees especially in regards to watering. The water bags should be filled at least once a week, more often depending on wind and temperature. The soaker system can be controlled by a timer to run as needed. It takes time for the newly planted tree to acclimate to its new setting. Patience is one of the most important inputs for a new tree.

There are several online resources for caring for your new tree. The one we suggest is treesaregood.org.
